Job DescriptionGeneral Purpose of the Job:Lead, plan, organize, communicate and direct Risk Management activities throughout Sparrow Health System affiliates, including Sparrow Hospital (Level I Trauma Center), affiliate acute care, long-term acute care and critical access hospitals, hospice, home health, and outpatient/ambulatory facilities so as to comply with applicable laws, regulations, standards and guidelines established by federal, state, and local laws and accrediting bodies and clinical best practices.Essential Duties:This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Develops, leads and oversees the organizational Enterprise Risk Management program for the Health System
  • Directs and oversees resolution of risk management issues referred for inquiry, investigation and resolution and collaborates with other leaders to determine the appropriate handling of such issues
  • Leads the analysis of trends of adverse events and collaborates on the development of specific programs that target reduction in adverse events or hazards
  • Actively leads education and initiatives designed for the effective disclosure of adverse events to patients and families by serving as a consultant and educator to those accountable to disclose this information particularly in areas of apology and CANDOR approach
  • Provides leadership in selecting events for presentation to the Serious Safety Event Committee and that require Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Manages all insurance coverage throughout the Health System (with the exception of workers' compensation)
  • Designs, implements, and oversees a cost-effective claims management program for professional/general liability, property and other insurance claims that are brought against the Health System
  • Develops policies, procedures, systems and works flows that enhance the overall Risk Management Program throughout the Health System
  • Leads loss prevention and loss reduction strategies targeted to reduce frequency and severity of adverse events and claims
  • Establishes and maintains two-way communication between Risk Management, Patient Safety, Patient Experience and other key areas throughout the Health System
  • Aids in the implementation of a just culture
  • Responsible for knowledge and interpretation of various rules, regulations and standards that impact healthcare delivery
  • Collaborates with executive leadership, management, and staff to effectively incorporate the Risk Management program within organization's operations and programs
  • Works in conjunction to provide regular reports to the Health System Board Quality and Safety Committee and is solely responsible to present quarterly reports to community hospital and affiliates governance and safety committees
  • Establishes an annual budget to support the Health System Risk Management program
  • Establishes relationships with executive level system leadership and governance and can proactively communicate system initiatives, trends, risks, and process improvements appropriately to evidence the strength and maturity of the Enterprise Risk Management program
  • Leads the monthly Risk Executive Committee and serves as the direct liaison to Health System's insurance brokersJob RequirementsWork Experience --- Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience in risk management fields with emphasis on clinical as well as enterprise risk management in a large/complex healthcare organization --- Experience managing insurance programs for large/complex healthcare organization
  • Healthcare degree or Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or related field
    Specialized Knowledge and Skills Required: --- Ability to research state and federal laws and regulations --- Ability to pay attention to detail --- Strong organizational skills --- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision --- Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal --- Ability to deliver highest quality work in a high volume, fast paced office environment --- High level of discretion and confidentiality --- Demonstrated knowledge of medico-legal matters and risk-management programs --- Expertise in quality, risk, patient safety, infection prevention and TJC, CMS, as well as knowledge and experience in change management/improvement methodologies and organizational transformation --- Clinical expertise in identification of best clinical practices --- Leader that builds consensus, teamwork to achieve process improvement and desired outcomes --- Strong analytical skills and ability to understand data, trends, and basic statistics --- Ability to interpret critical loss data and perform strategic financial analysis --- Comprehensive knowledge of Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS) and the ability to integrate into RMIS --- Ability to influence upward, across and down with or without direct lines of authority; ability to manage and coordinate assignments within a matrix organization --- Demonstrate strong leadership ability to promote organizational risk management in a positive, aspirational manner --- Ability to inform, educate and influence others to support organizational goals and directives --- Ability to cope with stressful situations and maintain a calm and professional manner --- Develops solutions to problems of unusual complexity that require a high degree of ingenuity, creativity and innovation Preferred: --- Master's Degree or Juris Doctor Degree --- Registered Nurse or other licensed healthcare provider --- Certified Professional Healthcare Risk Management --- Successful track record demonstrating a strong positive impact on frequency and severity of organization's loss history --- Fellow American Society for Healthcare Risk Management.
