Job Description
General Purpose of Job:
Performs established laboratory procedures, maintains and operates instrumentation and evaluates, interprets and reports test results while meeting quality assurance parameters. Provides information and related services as needed in assigned areas of the laboratory department.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Verifies patient identity and performs venipunctures, blood cultures, bleeding times, drug screen collection and micro techniques accurately and efficiently following established procedures, including proper labeling of specimens.
  • Operates computers to verify collections, order tests, retrieve data and generate reports.
  • Performs pre-analytical sample processing according to established procedures.
  • Performs waived to highly complex laboratory testing according to established procedures.
  • Prioritizes workload to maximize efficiency while meeting patient and physician needs.
  • Restocks all necessary supplies in order to maintain established stock levels.
  • Performs routine and special clinical laboratory tests in assigned sections of the clinical laboratory, utilizing automated and non-automated equipment.
  • Assesses results with respect to controls, reviews results for accuracy and communicates results of tests performed to physicians and other authorized personnel.
  • Communicates problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature both within the department and interdepartmentally. Responsible for monitoring of Point of Care Testing.
  • Analyzes and evaluates laboratory test results to determine inconsistent results and takes appropriate action.
  • Maintains equipment in operational condition through making minor adjustments, performing scheduled maintenance, and troubleshooting major problems utilizing departmental resources and manufacturer's technical support resources.
  • Performs related duties such as obtaining blood specimens, processing specimens and related clerical duties. Assist with the development and revisions of technical procedures and protocols.
  • Maintains clean and efficient work area and replenishes supplies as necessary.
  • Prioritizes workload to maximize efficiency while meeting patient and physician needs.
  • Works independently and part of a team to ensure departmental service goals are met.
  • Perform supervisory duties as assigned by laboratory manager.

    Job Requirements
    General Requirements Registry eligible or comparable experience in a clinical laboratory. Work Experience Completion of an internship or comparable experience in a medical laboratory preferred Education Bachelors of Science degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related field. Specialized Knowledge and Skills Demonstrated knowledge of disease processes as related to patient conditions and pertinent laboratory testing performed. A basic knowledge of mathematics, accuracy, precision, normal ranges and correlation with existing methods including evaluation of clinical specimens for suitability for testing and presence of interfering substances. Basic computer skills for data entry, instrument operations and report production. Basic knowledge of microscope use and function. Demonstrates effective, positive verbal communication skills to those served by the laboratory. Basic ability to resolve instrument problems.

    • External new hires are eligible for the bonus noted below to be paid as follows:
    • $2,500.00 bonus paid the first full pay period following completion of probationary period
    • $2,500.00 bonus paid the first full pay period following twelve (12) months of service
    • Caregivers who do not remain in a qualifying Medical Technologist classification and shift at Sparrow Ionia Hospital as noted above for a minimum of twenty-four (24) months will be expected to reimburse the Hospital for the bonus.
