The Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI), a leading life-science research institution, is seeking a Chief Talent Officer (CTO) who will implement effective plans to attract, retain, deploy, assess and nurture talent in alignment with BTI’s mission. The CTO will articulate and drive the talent agenda of the Institute and manage cultural change in strategic partnership with other leadership team members. In addition, the CTO will lead and direct a team carrying out the planning, design, implementation and ongoing administration of activities and related programs encompassing compensation, benefits, employee relations, payroll, compliance, staffing, employment practices, orientation and training.

Responsibilities:

Implement and lead strategies to create a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Foster a workplace that authentically reflects BTI’s vision and values by facilitating meaningful and purposeful connections among BTI members and building a team of productive, collaborative and supportive stewards of the Institute’s mission.

Provide support to the faculty and staff throughout their experience at BTI by creating an environment that values and supports diversity; recruiting, hiring and retaining top-performing talent; and prioritizing continuing education, professional development, work/life balance and organizational health.

Membership and participation on the Institute’s senior leadership team

Provide guidance for recruitment of senior and other key personnel, including participating on search committees when appropriate.

Provide guidance for the Institute’s Visa Program (F1, OPT, TN, J1, and H1B).

Develop and maintain an integrated, strategic compensation program; review and approve classification and reclassification of positions; recommend changes to compensation structure; ensure market competitiveness and internal equity.

Coordinate the performance evaluation and goal setting process, providing oversight and review as outlined in BTI policy.

Oversee personnel carrying out the payroll function.

Oversee benefits administration; evaluate and make recommendations for changes in benefits programs.

Chair benefit planning committee.

Compile and oversee the annual 403(b) and HR-related audits.

Assist others in developing training programs for employees in accordance with research and business goals and objectives.

Monitor and oversee compliance with BTI, state and federal policy as it relates to human resources functions.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

The CTO must have a master’s or advanced technical degree. PHR or SPHR certification is required. Significant experience in the HR sphere is preferred, ideally supplemented with knowledge of a research or non-profit environment. The CTO will be responsible for working with other members of the leadership team to build and supervise a support team to carry out the objectives of the role. The position requires proficiency in standard business applications; previous HRIS experience preferred.

Other skills required for the position include the suite of abilities and capabilities expected of leaders and human resource professionals – including 1) effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills; 2) the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization; 3) the ability to maintain confidentiality; 4) conflict resolution; 5) change management and strategic thinking; and 6) a knowledge of approaches and issues relevant to broadening participation and workforce diversity.
