Must reside in the State of MichiganPositions Location: Lansing, MIJob DescriptionGeneral Purpose of Job:Assign diagnosis and procedure codes to reflect the condition(s) and treatment provided to the patient based on the documentation within the record for both inpatient and outpatient stays. The code assignment is utilized to determine reimbursement for the facility and physician, quality measures, hospital statistics, and medical research.Essential Duties:This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge and applies current coding and billing regulations, policies, processes, procedures with effective decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to research and apply knowledge to code assignment independantly and accurately
  • Abstracts data in compliance with regulatory and billing policies.
  • Interprets and reviews medical record documentation to assign accurate ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, MS DRG, and APR DRG for hospital inpatient services; as well as, accurately assign ICD-10 CM, CPT codes, and APC's for hosptial outpatient services according to National Coding Guidelines based on physician documentation within the record
  • Analyze both he MS and APR DRG to ensure it reflects the conditions and treatment of the patient appropriately for hospital inpatient cases
  • Analyze for medical neccessity with code assignment
  • Detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology, surical technology, pharmacology, and disease processes to be able to apply the National Coding Guidelines appropriately for code assignment
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sequencing diagnoses and procedure codes outlined in ICD-10 Offical Coding Guidelines, UHDDS, CMS areas in regard to appropriate documentation and coding of services to achieve accurate billing
  • Clarifies physician documentation by using the query process and procedure for compliant queries.
  • Meets the established coding and abstracting quality and productivity standarnds, consistently
  • May provide training and/or quality support as directed
  • Work closely with Clinical Documentation Specialist to ensure the code assignment and clinical status of the documentation are reflected appropriately for Hospital Inpatient.
  • Support the partnership with the Clinical Documentation specialist and Coding in determining the appropriate code assignment and query process as needed
  • Contributes to a positive department image of demonstrating professionalism, teamwork, and mutual respect.
  • Abstract the appropriate information into the Epic System and complete all abstracts
  • Utilize Optum CAC, ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, and CPT code book and other reference tools to assist in the code assignment
  • Assists physicians and other direct patient care professionals in questions regarding diagnostic and procedure codes
  • Assist the billing department with code assignment with edits and denied claims when requested
  • Fosters respect for patient privacy by maintaining confidentiality in all phases of work
  • Maintains knowledge of coding related publications
  • Additional duties as assignedJob RequirementsGeneral Requirements Eligible to take the RHIT/RHIA exam RHIT, RHIA, or CCS preferredWork Experience 1 year of Acute Care Hospital Revenue Cycle Management Experience Previous Coding Experience preferred Electronic Medical Record preferredEducation Associates Degree in Health Information ManagementSpecialized Knowledge and Skills Demonstrates knowledge of ICD-10 CM and CPT 4. Member of the American Health Information Association in good standing (i.e. has paid dues and completed required continuing education.
